Volz was born in Michigan and received his M.S. and Ph. D. degrees in plant sciences, mycology and cancer chemotherapy from Michigan State University. He taught classes in medical microbiology, mycology and others at Eastern Michigan University and became chair of the Microbiology department and director of the Mycology laboratory.
